Tell Us Why You Started Your Business/Started Your Profession?

I started my career as a social media influencer because when I was younger I didn’t have anyone that looked like me to looked up to. No one embraced curly hair, curves, or skin like mines and I wanted to be sure I was able to help others shine as I wanted to shine.

What Makes Your Brand Unique?

My brand is all about finding yourself and rediscovering your true potential. Being true to your talents & dreams and making sure that you do whatever it takes to get there.

Who motivates and Inspires You?

My greatest inspirations are Iris Beilin @IrisBeilin, Charmaine @Thebyb, and Maya Washington @ShamelessMaya they inspire me to continue my passions and just doing what I love.

What Obstacles Have Your Had to Overcome While Running Your Business?

Obstacles, where aren’t the obstacles? Coming up with ideas to stay fresh & relevant is the hugest obstacle! Being aware of the skin your in & maintaining your ground while doing all you can to represent the best you can be. It’s a hard work, this career & you must be willing to sacrifice time to get what you need done after your 9-5 or even during it if you are not where you want to be yet.

What Does Latin Beauty Mean To You?

Latin Beauty means living and embracing the beautiful skin I was raised in. It’s not picking sides or being told to pick a piece of me. I am a proud Latina with African Decent and I plan on embracing that for the rest of my life.

What are the 3 Core Values of Your Business Model? and Why?

Being true to who you are. Fighting for what you feel is right. And most of all, having fun!

How Do You Overcome Fear?

I over come fear by doing whatever I’m most afraid to do. Life is about taking risk! We must learn to live it all.

What Message Do You Have For Emerging Entrepreneurs

Moguls in the Making: Andrea Avila

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.jpg

Another beautiful Tuesday has come around which means it’s time to highlight another Mogul who’s apart of the Latina Beauty Matters family. Andrea Avila is a makeup artist and the Founder of Homegirlz Beauty Shop. Listen ladies, if you are trying to go out tonight with your lashes on fleek, then I defiantly would refer you to her store because baaabbbyyy, she has some bomb mink lashes. The lashes drew me to her page, but her fight to the top is what keep me intrigued. Take a look at her story.

Tell Us Why You Started Your Business/Started Your Profession?

My name is Andrea known as 'slaydre' on Instagram, in 2015 I started to get really involved with make up and posting my beauty looks and reviewing products on social media I was very inspired with beauty gurus on IG, I remember seeing all these small businesses start coming up and creating eyelashes, highlighters and a lot more beauty products. I have always been the biggest fan to small businesses coming up in the beauty and fashion world.

I started purchasing and re posting so many small companies on my IG because I was just very impressed with the fact they put their all into starting their own business and into having a products they know people would love. Their strive for success is what really just made me so excited for them. I remember having clients as a make up artist was starting to become something I didn't want to do. I wanted so much more, so I started to strive to get a job in the beauty/make up industry so I can start learning retail and customer service.

QQQW.jpg

I received a job at a makeup shop and after my first day I wasn't called back and it really made me feel like I would never be good enough to work at beauty store I felt no motivation it just really put me down. That same year I continued looking and started posting a lot more on social media, I have a very 90s old school vibe and I know a lot of Latinas who have the same style and I just love to see everyone have their own way of putting together their style a lot of similarities to mine. If I can say what really pushed me to start my own business it's exactly that style and my strive to be just like the small businesses I look up to today.

I am a Latina both my parents are from Michoacán, Mexico and I want more than a 9-5 job I want to inspire I want to someday hopefully be successful in my business and I want women like myself to know that no matter what you look like you should always feel beautiful. I embrace my beautiful brown skin, dark eyes, my long hair and my beautiful soul.

What Makes Your Brand Unique?

I could say style, colors and content.

Who motivates and Inspires You?

People who speak positive and support me also many business owners who just like me start somewhere but are inspired to strive for more. All the latinas who support small businesses . A lot of my followers style and beautiful faces.

What Obstacles Have Your Had to Overcome While Running Your Business?

There are down days were I get uninspired and have a lot of negative thoughts, People who make rude comments, People who don't believe in me including family.

What Does Latin Beauty Mean To You?

It means learning how to love every part of yourself, Loving were you come from, the beauty in being Latin itself.

What are the 3 Core Values of Your Business Model? and Why?

Inspiration, Respect and love. Because each and everyone of these are what my business is all about.

How Do You Overcome Fear?

I just go for it and always remember that if I don't step out of the comfort zone I'm going to stay in the same place. So I gather my thoughts up, meditate and continue the direction I'm going taking risks that I can either learn from or succeed in.

What Message Do You Have For Emerging Entrepreneurs

Go for it, do what you love and if you get one small opportunity take it no matter how many people say no it won't happen I'm telling you take it. Put yourself in crowds with people in the same boat as you because you're going to learn so much more than wasting time being around people who tell you that you won't make it.

Moguls in the Making: Alexandria Baum

COVER IMAGE.jpg

Happy Tuesday darlings! It’s super gloomy outside but I have an Entrepreneur to tell you about that will brighten your day. Not only can this young lady dress but she is responsible for the alignment of some of your favorite brands around the glove. This weeks mogul highlight is Alexandria Baum. She is the co-Founder of the creative agency Xxcreativ . I came across the beauties page on my weekly IG search. Immediately I was drawn to her because she has a drive that unhinged. Then secondly because of her consistency. From observation it’s apparent that Alexandria has a blueprint for anyone looking to tap into the Public relations, management space. Let’s take a look at how she got her start, and why being a creative is so important to her.

IMG_0327.jpg

Tell Us Why You Started Your Business/Started Your Profession?

My goal alongside my business partner, was to develop a hybrid agency that encompassed marketing, public relations, social media, content creation, brand management and production/activations in a CREATIV way, to expand our client's portfolio and business(es).

What Makes Your Brand Unique?

We are not just focused on one area of our client's brand. With the ever evolving landscape of media and advertising, we found it very important to touch all aspects of a client's brand to build out unique and effective campaigns particularly within lifestyle, fashion, beauty, entertainment and sports industries.

Who motivates and Inspires You?

There are a lot of people and things that inspire/motivate me on a daily basis, but my family - particularly mi Madre y Abuelita - are a constant motivator in my life. Both were single Mother's who built a solid foundation, allowing me to explore and become the independent woman I am today.

What Obstacles Have Your Had to Overcome While Running Your Business?

There are so many obstacles to face in business...especially as a woman of color! LOL I think the biggest obstacle thus far has been tuning out my own self-doubt and negative energy of others. People will always have something to say and it's easy to start doubting your abilities...but don't! You have to consistently remind yourself that you would not have gotten this far if you weren't good at what you do.

What Does Latin Beauty Mean To You?

To me, Latinas are some of the most beautiful and strongest women in the world. Growing up, you didn't see a lot of Latinas in mainstream pop culture/media so, it's exciting to see us represented in beauty, fashion, entertainment and business today.

What are the 3 Core Values of Your Business Model? and Why?

Strategize. Execute. Integrity. All three of these are important for many reasons beginning with a strategic plan. It's not smart to go into any business or client endeavor blindly...research and strategize effectively so, you know what you're talking about and are ahead of the trends. Execution is probably one of the most, if not the most important, part of business in my mind. While strategizing and talking a good business game is great, your hustle is what will determine your success. Unfortunately, 'almost' doesn't count...especially to clients. Integrity...this is something I personally feel is lacking in a lot of people I've encountered in may career over the years. In an era of 'Google' and 'Social Media,' how people perceive you both personally and professionally can effect your business...and ultimately your coin. I've always prided myself on being a woman of integrity and standing firm for what I believe in.

How Do You Overcome Fear?

I feel the best way to overcome fear is to face it straight on, no matter what it is. While it can be scary and/or intimidating, I always feel a sense of relief once I've conquered something that I once feared.

What Message Do You Have For Emerging Entrepreneurs

Whatever you love to do...do that!

As a kid I use to watch ANTM and the makeover episodes were my favorite. Ever since then I feel in love with the beauty industry it gives you the power to transform your self and others.

Who motivates and Inspires You?

I look for inspiration in everything that I do. Working with artist the lyrics in music inspired my ideas. Working in LA getting to see all the art and the different people gives me my inspiration. Also my family inspires me to do better and achieve more.

What Obstacles Have Your Had to Overcome While Running Your Business?

I would say it would be pushing my self to stay inspired. Even when I’m not, also spreading the word of my own business as a makeup artist word of mouth is amazing advertising. Not having others believe in you but that is when you have to push your self and remind yourself how amazing you are.

What Does Latin Beauty Mean To You?

To me Latina beauty means being strong loving and caring.. that beauty in your heart shines so much more than any lipstick can.

What are the 3 Core Values of Your Business Model? and Why?

1) Great customer service- when you give amazing service to your clients and they will tell all of their fiends.

Moguls in the Making: Elaine Rau

Staff
elaine-headshot-1.jpg

Welcome to the first ever recipient of the our weekly Moguls in the Making spotlight. The goal of this series is to spotlight Latin men and women who are making a difference in the community and have built brands or have went into professions where they can be a light and positive example for our youth.

This weeks pick is Elaine Rau. Elaine is the founder of the women’s empowerment site Ladybossblogger. With more than 150,000 subscribers to her site, she is proven that hard work and dedication truly yields results. Take a look at her story.

Tell Us Why You Started LadyBossBlogger?

I started it out of necessity. I had just quit my job, moved overseas to a third world country and was jobless, close to broke, and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. So I decided to start a blog and interview the people I wanted to become, female entrepreneurs, so I could learn from them.

What Makes Your Brand Unique?

I feature the WHO behind the BRAND and elevate the every day woman who is working hard on making her dreams her reality. I am filling the internet with stories of normal women and their journeys towards success to motivate and inspire other women to do the same.

What Obstacles Have Your Had to Overcome While Running Your Business?

When I started out I had zero confidence and would accommodate everyone and work for nothing. Now that I've been in business for two years, I have finally started valuing myself and my time and this comes from becoming more confident. However ironically, now that I stand my ground and say "no" to things that don't align with my goals, not everyone respects that I have boundaries. As a business owner, you have to learn how to walk the fine line between being accommodating and being a push over and it's not always easy to navigate.

What are the 3 Core Values of Your Business Model? and Why?

1. Passion 2. Empathy 3. Innovation. You must be passionate about what you're doing in order to care or have empathy for the people you're serving and you must constantly be ready to pivot, change and innovate. We are living in a time where it's incredibly easy to get into business, so there is a ton of passion and empathy in the market, but little innovation from large companies which is why online businesses are slowly taking over. You MUST be willing to change with the times or get left behind.

How Do You Overcome Fear?

To overcome fear you must understand it. What exactly are you afraid of? I was terrified of being recorded just 6 months ago. I had to force myself to be in situations that were uncomfortable in order to become comfortable with it. The first step I took was I accepted 3 online video interviews instead of turning them down, which ironically made me more comfortable with podcasts. Then I signed up to be a speaker at various events and panels which forced me to speak in front of hundreds of people. However I was still terrified of being recorded? So I reached out to my email list to see if they would go on Instagram Live with me, a day later I was booked out for a month and after that month I got over my fear of being on video. Having an audience in person then online that gave me incredible feedback was the confidence boost I needed to get over my fear of video. Who would have known I would be speaking in front of hundreds of people before I would be able to record myself in my own room?

What Does Latin Beauty Mean To You?

Beauty means learning about and embracing who you are at your core, who you were designed to be as well as who you're becoming. Self discovery is something that happens as you grow, it's a continual process that you must keep up with. Beauty is confidence that is unbreakable because it isn't dependent on what other people say, rather it's what you believe about yourself and from that inner power your confidence radiates and shines through to how you present yourself externally which is what makes you beautiful.

What Message Do You Have For Emerging Entrepreneurs

Learn about your habits, get rid of ones that don't serve you and create new and effective ones that do. When are you most alert and ready to work? Set a schedule to accommodate yourself. Do you work best at home? In a coffee shop? Do you have a designated work space? Learn what works best for you. What does self care look like to you? To me it's getting massages, to you it may be taking a yoga class or eating out. Figure out what relaxes you. Keep learning about yourself and how to best optimize your time and energy.
